PSD Software Overview
PSD Computing and IT uses a variety of tools to manage and protect our fleet of devices. Below is a list of the tools we use. If you would like to install any of these tools on your workstations or servers, please submit a request to psdsupport@uchicago.edu and we can assist you.
Tool | Desktop/Laptop/Server | Installation type | Description |
Active Directory | Any (Windows/Mac) | Native | Provides authentication services for your device. Allows you to log into your computer with your CNET ID. On Windows, also allows your computer to receive policies to secure your computer. |
Automox | Any (Windows/Mac/Linux) | Agent | Secures your computer by ensuring you have patches for your operating system (Windows, Mac, and Linux) as well as 3rd party software (e.g. Zoom, Adobe, etc.) |
CrashPlan | Desktop/Laptop (Windows/Mac) | Agent | Backs up your device’s files to the cloud. All data is encrypted and only your computer can decrypt it. Restore your files via self service without the need to call IT. IT can assist you in restoring files if you’d like. |
CrowdStrike | Any (Windows/Mac/Linux) | Agent | University’s approved spam/malware software. Keeps your machine safe by blocking viruses and malware. Can also be configured to alert without blocking. |
Jamf | Desktop/Laptop/Tablet (Mac/iOS) | Agent | Apple management tool. Allows IT to secure your Apple device by pushing policies. Also allows IT to remotely lock your Apple device if it is lost or stolen. Also ensures your device is encrypted to comply with University’s requirement. |
Rapid7 | Server (Windows/Linux) |
Preferred: Native Authentication (Agent available) |
University’s preferred tool for server vulnerability scanning. When your server is tied to Rapid7, the service will log into your device once a week (usually via SSH key) and scan the system for vulnerabilities. It will then provide you with a report and guidance on how to close your server’s vulnerability. Rapid7 is a read-only tool and does not patch or make changes to your system. |
