Hardware Resources
The University has negotiated preferred pricing with Dell and CDW-G (Apple) for desktops, laptops, and tablets. They have also negotiated preferred pricing with GovConnection for computer peripherals and components. You may log into Oracle and view these vendor’s offerings via the punch out.
There are no preferred vendors for servers however Dell will give significant discounts off prices posted on their public website.

Software Resources
The University has a number of site licenses with vendors to provide software at a free or discounted rate. You can read more about our licensing agreements here.

High Performance Compute and Cloud Resources
The University hosts an abundance of computing resources. Some are available at no cost while others require funding. Below is list of resources and their capabilities.
Research Computing Center
The Research Computing Center (RCC) provides access to high-end computing and visualization resources, secure computing environment, high-capacity storage and backup, software, high-speed networking, and hosted data sets.

Open Science Pool
The OSPool is a source of computing capacity that is accessible to any researcher affiliated with a US academic institution. Capacity is allocated following a Fair-Share policy. To harness the OSPool capacity you will need to obtain an account via the OSG Portal.
Cloud Services
University faculty and staff have access to Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure as a secure, cloud service platform. The services provide UChicago with a full set of computational infrastructure. Everything you need is available on-demand, including servers, storage, databases, programming environments, and a broad set of application services over the internet. You can use it for a wide range of tasks like teaching, managing University operations, and scientific computing. These services are obtained through an arrangement with Internet2 and DLT Solutions.
Co-location of resources
The following data centers have rack space available to faculty and PIs in the Physical Sciences Division. Please consult with PSD Computing and IT prior to purchasing server and rack equipment to ensure space is available to house tour equipment.
Hinds Data Center
The Hinds Data Center is located at 5734 S Ellis Ave in the basement of Henry Hinds Laboratory for the Geophysical Sciences. The data center one hundred 42-U racks and has 450 kilowatts of power. The data center supports 10 GB connections to the campus network.
6045 S Kenwood Data Center
The 6045 S Kenwood Data Center is located at 6045 S Kenwood Ave in the IT Services’ office building. The data center hosts X bays with Y racks. The data center supports Z Gigabit connections to the campus network.
